Letter from the Honourable Jason Nixon
As Alberta’s Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, I’m honoured to welcome you to the inaugural issue of Alberta Senior Living.
This magazine arrives at an important time. Alberta is home to approximately 860,000 seniors, and by 2035, that number will exceed one million. These aren’t just statistics - these are our parents, grandparents, friends, neighbours and community leaders who have built our province into the Alberta we know and love today, and who continue to shape our future.
Seniors are the backbone of our communities. You’ve raised families, built businesses, volunteered countless hours and passed down the values that make Alberta strong. Now, as our government works to ensure Alberta remains the best place to live, work and age, we’re committed to making sure you have the supports, services and opportunities you need to continue living life on your terms.
We’ve heard loud and clear that Albertans want to stay in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. That’s why we established Assisted Living Alberta, our new provincial continuing care agency, to help older Albertans age with dignity in your homes and communities by providing medical and non-medical services, home care, community care and social supports. This approach gives seniors more options, independence and flexibility to receive care when and where it works best for you.
Aging well is also about staying active, engaged, and contributing to our communities. Alberta’s seniors play a vital role by volunteering, mentoring, and passing on their knowledge and experience to younger generations. When that wisdom is shared, our families, communities, and province are stronger for it.
At this important stage of life, whether you’re exploring new hobbies, spending time with family, volunteering, travelling or simply enjoying the community you’ve helped build, our government is committed to supporting you every step of the way.
Thank you for everything you’ve done to make Alberta the incredible province it is today.
Here’s to the next chapter.
